How to Play Word Finder

Word Finder is the classic word search puzzle game that challenges your vocabulary, pattern recognition, and visual scanning abilities. Hunt for hidden words in a grid of letters, racing against the clock to find them all.

Game Objective

Your mission is to locate all hidden words within the letter grid as quickly as possible. Words can be positioned horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, running either forward or backward. Each puzzle comes with a word list showing exactly which words you need to find. The game completes when you've successfully located every word.

How to Play

Getting Started

  1. Select Difficulty: Choose your puzzle size and word count. Larger grids with more words provide greater challenges
  2. Review Word List: Study the list of words you need to find. Words may be themed around specific topics or categories
  3. Start Searching: Click the Start button to begin the timer and start hunting for words

Finding and Selecting Words

To select a word, click or tap on its first letter, then drag to its last letter in a straight line (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal). If you've correctly identified a word from the list, it will be highlighted and marked as found. The word will also be crossed off your word list to help you track progress.

Words can overlap each other, meaning the same letter might be used in multiple words. Pay attention to these shared letters as they often provide clues about nearby words. If you accidentally select the wrong letters, simply release and try again with no penalty.

Controls

  • Mouse: Click and drag from the first letter to the last letter of a word
  • Touch: Tap and drag your finger across the letters to select a word
  • Word List: Click any word in the list to see how many letters it contains
  • Pause Button: Temporarily stop the timer to take a break
  • Reset Button: Generate a brand new puzzle with different word placements

Scoring System

Your performance is primarily measured by completion time. The faster you find all words, the better your score. The game tracks several statistics:

  • Total completion time for the entire puzzle
  • Words found versus total words in the puzzle
  • Best (fastest) completion time for each difficulty level
  • Average completion time across multiple games
  • Total puzzles completed

Tips and Strategies

Efficient Scanning Techniques

Systematic Search Patterns: Instead of randomly scanning the grid, work through it methodically. Try scanning horizontally row by row first, then vertically column by column, and finally diagonally. This ensures you don't miss obvious words.

Focus on Uncommon Letters: Start by searching for words containing unusual letters like Q, X, Z, or J. These letters appear less frequently in the grid, making their words easier to spot than common words filled with E, A, or S.

Word List Strategy

Prioritize Short Words: Begin with the shortest words on your list. Three and four-letter words are quicker to find and eliminate from your search, helping you build momentum and reduce the size of your remaining word list.

Group by Starting Letter: Mentally organize the word list alphabetically. When you spot a letter in the grid, quickly recall which words start with that letter rather than checking every word individually.

Pattern Recognition

Identify Common Endings: Look for common word endings like -ING, -TION, -ABLE, or -NESS. These patterns are easier to spot than individual letters and often lead you to longer words quickly.

Scan for Word Beginnings: Similarly, watch for common prefixes like UN-, RE-, PRE-, or DIS-. When you find these letter combinations, check your word list for words that start with those prefixes.

Advanced Techniques

Peripheral Vision: Instead of focusing intently on each letter, slightly relax your focus to use your peripheral vision. This technique helps you spot familiar word shapes and patterns more quickly than reading letter by letter.

Backward Reading: Don't forget that words can be spelled backward. After scanning for forward words, make a second pass looking specifically for reversed spellings. This is especially important for symmetrical words like LEVEL or NOON.

Mark Your Territory: As you find each word, pay attention to the surrounding area. Neighboring letters often form other words, so once you find one word, thoroughly search the adjacent cells before moving to a new section of the grid.
